What’s In Your Hand?

Exodus 4:2 (HCSB) “The Lord asked him, What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” [Moses] replied.”

One of the most damaging ideas that has crept into the modern religious mind hinges on the idea that God, in His goodness, does EVERYTHING for us, with minimal effort on our part as human agents. Instead of seeking to participate in the plan God has established, many frequent houses of worship week after week, service after service, expecting God to perform at our beheast. What blessing am I going to receive? What prophetic word am I going to hear? What new opportunity is awaiting me? Although there is nothing intrinsically wrong with these questions within reason, these inquiries cannot be the chief aim of our allegiance towards God. God’s redemptive plan for humanity supersedes the shortsighted and self-aggrandizing desires we contend with. God desires to exemplify the extent of His grace through an authentic faith community who draw their life and breath from His divine spirit “…for in Him we derive our life and have motion… (17:28,Wuest).”

God desires active participation. One example that gives voice to this is taken from the calling of the Old Testament prophet, Moses. After encountering God through the burning bush, Moses begins to converse with God about delivering God’s people from the hand of Pharaoh. “What if they won’t believe me and will not obey me but say, The Lord did not appear to you? (4:1)” Without any delay, God immediately shifts Moses perspective from the opinions of the people to the power of the object within Moses’ hands. “The Lord asked him, ‘What is that in your hand?’” The issue was not how people saw Moses or whether people would believe in His calling; the issue was, Moses will you participate with me? Are you willing to use what is in your hand to assist in fulfilling my will upon the Earth? Even though it may not seem much to you- though it may seem ordinary and common to you- can I use what you have depended upon to accomplish my work in the world?

The inquiry appears simple but its outgrowth runs very deeply. What things have we disparaged and held back from the Master’s use because we simply did not esteem them worthy? God empowers those gifts and abilities that we offer to Him in sincere faith. The things that appear so minute can lead to the miraculous as we genuinely avail them to the praise and glory of God. It may not seem like much in your hand, but once coupled with the mercy of God, little things can produce big results.

Dear Lord,

I realize that the gifts and abilities that you have given to me do not end with me. My job is to offer my life to you, in faith. There is nothing beyond your control. By your Spirit, strengthen the gifts that are in my hand and use them for your glory. Today- in this moment- I choose to participate with your plan. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
In Him,

jsb
